Raffaello Castaldo shot and killed Vincenzo Castillo outside of his tenement residence at 229 South 7th Avenue in Mount Vernon on the evening of August 25, 1923. The two had been playing cards with other neighborhood men outside of Castaldo's grocery store at 224 South 7th Avenue, when an argument arose concerning possible cheating on Castaldo's part. The neighbors broke up the argument at that time; however, Castaldo retrieved a pistol and shot Castillo later that evening.
