Athanasios Kanelopoulos shot and killed Nicholas Philios, an acquaintance of his deceased brother and possible member of a rival gang, at Ruby's Restaurant at 150 Mount Vernon Avenue in Mount Vernon, N.Y. on the afternoon of October 1, 1929. Kanelopoulos' attorneys plead insanity and the defendant served time at Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Beacon, N.Y. until his death in 1944.
